Inspection and Servicing Fire Alarms
The period between successive inspection and servicing visits should be based upon a risk assessment. The recommended period between successive visits should not exceed six months. If a risk assessment shows a need for more frequent visits then all interested parties should agree the servicing schedule. If this recommendation is not implemented, it should be considered that the system is no longer compliant with the standard.
BS 5266 Part 1 1999

Fire Log Books
New style Fire Log Books have now been introduced, which explain all the requirements of service intervals and User Responsibilities.
Fire Training
Should be carried out Six Monthly, for residential premises, places of entertainment, large shops and department stores. Yearly for Industrial and Commercial premises. All staff is included, part time, night workers, cooks and cleaners all must be trained.
The above changes do not effect the daily, weekly or monthly tests and inspections you carry out, they are in addition to and may require you to change the way you manage your Fire Protection Responsibilities, For example, if you are currently having one annual service visit, you are now required to have two visits per year, at six monthly intervals. As one of your service providers, it is our duty to keep you up to date on current Fire Legislation. We will automatically update our data base to provide you a six monthly service. If you do not wish this to happen and would like to continue with an Annual Service please inform us in writing, or by Email to info@dcfire.co.uk If you require further information, or would like to discuss a quotation, or would like more information on our Training Courses, or Total Cover service, please call our team.

Understanding Disability
Disability Discrimination Act
The Disability Discrimination Act was introduced to address the discrimination that some less able persons endure in aspects of their social, working and daily life. Although the Act was introduced in 1995, its various requirements have been phased in over the last 7 years and the final phase came into force on the 1st October 2004. From this date, any person providing a service will have to address any physical barriers that could obstruct the use of that service by a less able person. Please be aware that under the Act a disability does not just relate to a physical impairment or simply a person in a wheelchair, it extends the definition to include many other conditions that could impair a person.
Devon & Cornwall Fire Protection have received many enquiries from small businesses concerned about the implications of the Act and what it actually means to them. To try and assist, we have obtained some handy fact sheets from the Department of Work and Pensions which are available as download. Remember to check your Fire Exits, Escape Routes, Toilets, and your Fire Alarm System. You may need to have a visual Alarms as well as audible Alarms.
